What does it take to reach proficiency in MI?

Where “competency” in Motivational Interviewing (MI) may refer to demonstrating MI skills in simulated exercises during workshops and consultations, MI “proficiency” refers to demonstrating fidelity to MI skills in real life (Frey et al., 2020). It is MI proficiency that is associated with real client impact and improved outcomes including client retention, engagement, and behavior change. It’s how we know we’re actually practicing MI most effectively.
