Motivational Interviewing Fidelity Coding Training
with the MITI 4.2.1
How do we know it’s really good MI? Brewer & Bristow Training is excited to offer this highly interactive, online course walking participants through use of the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity 4.2.1 Coding Manual (“the MITI”) for fidelity coding of audio recordings. We’ll also practice providing helpful and MI-consistent coding feedback for MI learners and discuss ways to grow in coding proficiency and reliability.
This training is limited to 14 participants.
May 2026 MITI Coding Training
Part 1: MITI Overview & Global Ratings
Tuesday, May 5th at 1:00-5:00pm ET (NY/US)
Part 2: MITI Behavior Counts
Wednesday, May 6th at 1:00-5:00pm ET
Part 3: Coding with transcripts
Tuesday, May 12th at 1:00-4:00pm ET
Part 4: Coding without transcripts
Wednesday, May 13th at 1:00-4:00pm ET
Part 5: Paired coding & coaching practice

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this series, participants will:
Define the purpose of fidelity coding in Motivational Interviewing and how MITI 4.2.1 supports MI skill development.
Identify the major components of the MITI 4.2.1 coding system, including global ratings, utterance parsing, and behavior counts.
Describe the operational definitions of each global score and behavior code, distinguishing similarities and differences among them.
Differentiate between MI-consistent and MI-inconsistent clinician behaviors as defined by the MITI 4.2.1 manual.
Recognize common challenges and errors in coding utterances, globals, and behavior counts.
Apply MITI 4.2.1 decision rules to parse complex clinician speech into discrete utterances.
Score sample clinician utterances accurately using behavior counts.
Rate recorded MI sessions for global dimensions of relational and technical skills.
Analyze the relationship between MITI 4.2.1 scores and the underlying principles of Motivational Interviewing.
Calculate summary scores and metrics from coded sessions, including reflection-to-question ratio and percent complex reflections.
Evaluate the reliability of coding through practice with and without transcripts, and assess strategies for building inter-rater reliability.
Interpret MITI 4.2.1 coding data to identify strengths and growth areas in a clinician’s MI practice, including through coding practice with a partner in this training.
Practice delivering coding feedback in a coaching style that is congruent with the spirit of MI.
Construct balanced and actionable feedback statements for learners based on coded MI samples.
Integrate MITI 4.2.1 coding into supervision, training, and research contexts to enhance MI fidelity monitoring.
Reflect on one’s own learning process and coding development to create a personal plan for continued practice and reliability.
